it was today. -12°c make you very grateful for your gloves and very ungrateful towards camera 'engineers' creating itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie rubber knobs on the remote control of your camera, which refuse to be operated with gloves.
i had found a small streambed just below a seamill, which sported besides the usual icicles also this wonderful transparent ice sheets between the rocks. well worth freezing off my fingers for one hour...

the very last day of my holidays. spelled 'relief' when all my ladies were gone to school. spent a hell of a time with doctors and administration. finally went out shooting and found my private, yet cold, bonanza. lightzone helped me to show what i saw.

from the 'instead of eating burgers' series. the tripod at home for sure is pretty useless. on the other hand, that overlay of noise on the fine structures in a certain way matches my eyesight degrading with upcoming twilight, so there is not much to complain. temperatures were cold, and color temperatures as well.
i have developed a certain preference for landscape shots without sky, that is one of the reasons why i do prefer here the lead shot.

my daughters were invited by a classmate for a birthday party in salzburg airport center's burger king, and i did prefer not to stay. hence the title (which is an adaption of moscow art trio's "instead of making children", a worthy recommendation for you jazz fans out there), and my mood then was comparable to today's when i did my tax declaration.

after winter came back into our valley for three days and brought some fresh snow, i used some free hours to go back to weissbach canyon to look for water and ice. those layers above covered several square meters of rocks. in the end they stopped my exploring of the canyon as they were impossible to cross, but the made a really good subject for a picture. this one is in fact a combination of four single shots in helicon focus to achieve overall sharpness. some massaging in lightzone helped to guide the eye a bit.

from yesterday's excursion into weissbach canyon. The light was quite flat on site, but raw processing with lightzone did small wonders. i tried to work out a good effect of the negative space embracing the icicles but still do wonder if it's the best possible crop.
paypal almost ruined the shot. if you could see this shot in full resolution, you would notice it's not razor sharp inspite having been taken with a tripod. But: it was taken with my old tripod, as paypal hold up the (bank collection) payment for the new one for 6 days and therefore it did not arrive in time. and the old tripod is too weak for camera plus zoom. can you imagine how furious I am?

the sunlight had selectively warmed this leaf so it sunk into the ice over the days. the low evening light then created this almost surreal look with the dark black borders.
it was the first time that one of my twin daughters, now six years old, came with me shooting. fortunately she did not get bored, but i had to explain several times that during exposure she was not allowed to move in order to avoid vibrations in the cassata-style soil.

i love this picture, but as the author i am allowed to be biased. i was told it does not contain a center of interest, and in the classic sense, this is true.
what i love in this picture is the shere abundance of colors, forms and structures. mute, like holding it's breath, but there and so manifold that it's almost unbelievable. creation provides, gives, cares...
to make it very clear: i am no evangelical or jehova's witness denying evolution. it's just that i can see both sides now and then.

a cold winter afternoon, and i was just checking skating opportunities with the family. my daughter had already cold feet so she was very impatiently waiting for me to stop taking pictures.
i already had this feeling of seeing a Brueghel like landscape (look at the return of the hunters) earlier in the Schönram bog resp. on the lake there, but the monastery of Höglwörth was necessary to add this certain mediaval touch to the picture.

this year's winter is almost non-existing here in Berchtesgadener Land. Only in shadowy valleys in the mountains it is cold enough for skateable ice. there I found these beautiful frost flowers on some rocks in a landscape from a fairy tale.
