The harbour water is not such an attractive medium - oily, smelly and so on, probably the same in every harbour of the world. Amazing enough locals are fishing there, and I guess even that fish is ending on the table.
But the reflective qualities of the water are still intact, and the way the ripples dissolve the form of the ships was really amazing.

Strolling through the city last week seemed to get my optical receptors going. Both images were shot on the way to/from work. For an unknown reason it is much easier for me to set aside some 20 minutes from the way to the office, knowing that I have to stay longer, then to get up early on a saturday morning.

over at his blog andreas manessinger showcases his one-image-a-day post number one-thousand! my heartfelt congratulations for the many excellent images he showed, his extraordinary perseverance, and not least his communicative skills.
andreas' blog was the first blog i followed regularly when i started blogging myself. and in the beginning it were largely his encouraging and challenging comments that made me intensify my work and speed up my posting frequency. i didn't forget his comment "can we have more of that please? three images in november? c'mooon :)" - andreas, thank you very much for this!

the prospect is wet: meteorologists predict heavy rainfall for my hometown, up to 100mm within 24 hours, which means flooding of many secondary roads and potential damage to the railways, too.
in the long term, i guess it's better to get used to weather extremes as this might be the future: the climate change will come not as a steady increase of temperatures but as more unstable weather conditions that challenge the vital infrastructure. but probably in a week or so the cat will dance on a hot tin roof again.

the dull light of todays afternoon could not motivate me to go out shooting, instead i spent some time with scribus, familiarizing myself with the sofobomo requirements to layout my pictures in a harmonic way.
the image shows pictograms on a train window, taken at this weeks commute to munich. i always carry my camera on these trips, but rarely use it that early in the morning, as usually my photographic brains are even more asleep then the rest of the body. but this time it had worked for me.

getting up early and trying to meet again the fishermen i had portrayed in an earlier visit, i found the beach empty, with a force 5 wind making all beach based fishery impossible. so i resorted to collecting small details, of which this fence part is one.
the fact that is a piece of asbestos sheet is interesting in this context, as the sri lanka government still sticks to the opinion that this material does no harm to humans. probably a case of successfull lobby policy.

in krk, the mantis can be met not only in human incarnations next to discos (as i was told) but also in insect form in the woods, on stone walls etc. the only specimen i found was on a wall in the middle of krk town, albeit a capital example.

my hometown seems to be a colorless, pale place in comparisons with the colors i see here in krk, croatia - or is it my eyes that suddenly open to see more then they use to do at home? george barr already had a go on this topic here and from what i know from fellow photographers, this seems to be a quite common problem.

saturday mornings visit to schönram bog was a success in terms of recreation, but not so much in terms of pictures. the frog concerto was good to hear but impossible to visualize and overall i was too late for the early morning mist that gives that bog such an impressive ghostly atmosphere - sunrise is at 5:15 at the moment and the 30 minutes of driving were enough for the sun to develop sufficient strength to quickly dissolve the remainders of the fog. it seems that i have to encourage my 'go' a little more - see paul lesters blog on the joy of waiting.
anyway, from my last mission to sri lanka there are some pictures left that i regard as worthy to be shown. like this one. it was taken with a 20 year old minolta zoom at iso 1600, and i am all over astonished again when i search for traces of image degradation that could be attested to this high sensivity.

a lesson in 'learning to see'. i had a bland image on my monitor, taken when i was quite tired at the end of an excursion with the family. i remembered that i had taken it because of the beautiful curve of the fence posts and the shadow curves of the fence's wire, but there was too much optical garbage clobbering the real subject. so out of a 12.7 MB file i cropped 1.5 MB, the resolution of a 2 year old mobile phone camera...

Whilst the moving body parts in the gym windows of the first floor don't really lend themselves for a (static) photograph, the reflections do so quite well.

maybe it's only a sort of necrophilia, but i do have to admit that i usually enjoy broken down machinery much more than the new, chrome fineshed, ultra polished specimen.
having half an hour to wander around next to the kid's skiing area, i noticed an old tractor left under some elder bushes for further decay. the sun was still high and the shadows harsh and no uniform background available for a shot of the whole carcass, so i resorted to some detail shots. during postprocessing i desaturated a bit, it makes the turquoise painting less presumptuous.

this is the story of a flop, almost.
my camera made this picture... the olde Minolta 7D has a really slow low light autofocus performance? Anyhow, i pressed the shutter and nothing happened because the outoffocus-system didn't see the subject as sharp. when it did, the girl had turned around her head - and the picture was good!
sometimes a flop can be a success.

maybe my secret affinity to abstracts, but for sure my love for harmonious compositions took me away - I simply liked this picture from the very first moment. Up to now not much postprocessing, just simple cropping was applied.
